Darkness crept over the crimson horizon, muting the vibrant tones of lavender and gold. Flames licked the opalescent waters of a sun-gilded lake, appearing to all the world as a pool of molten gold. Flimsy clouds scudded across the sky's grandeur, illuminated with the dying rays of the sun. The silent streets were empty of cars, most housefolk had already returned home. But, not at a certain dwelling, humans were flocking to the house like flies to honey. Among the empty avenue it stood out like a sore thumb, dwarfing the surrounding conservative abodes. Soft classical music and hushed voices, slowly drifted from the red-shuttered windows. Alone on the ivory terraces, a silvery-gray she-cat paused to admire the splendid sunset. "If only", she seemed to sigh, longing for a life she never knew. There was a time when she envied the proud winners, eating salmon every day, wearing a diamond-studded collar, parading her fur before expectant housefolk. That had all changed. A flick of a tail and her life was never the same. One simple step had morphed her whole existence from straggly kitten to supreme champion of the show. "The Winter Queen", they called her. The first Burmilla to grace a judging. But, somewhere deep inside she knew she was just plain old Julie, not La Bella Julia as her housefolk thought. The blue tinkling bell on her collar jingled, shaking her from her reverie. She licked a paw with mild distaste. Who knew such a small thing could be that much a nuisance? Well, she was getting nothing settled by sitting around and her belly was yowling with hunger. The strangers would likely stay for the whole evening. With elegant grace she dismounted, stepping lightly on her toes. Her tail flicked with slight amusement. Her housefolk would be complaining in the morning from drinking too much of the bubbly water. As a kitten she found the sparkling glasses of bubble-stuff fascinating, but she was older now, and wiser.Thirty-two moons of luxury changed a feline. With simple dignity she crept inside her housefolk's nest, claws clicking on the unnaturally smooth floor. She padded through a sea of moving legs, housefolk patting her raised head as she strode past, murmuring endearments to her splendid self.
