Menacing silhouettes cascaded upon the gloomy terrain, casting disfigured and mutilated darkness in it's wake. The sky remained a sickly gray-white, tinted reddish in the faint radiance of the dying sun. It was tween time, the awkward transition of nature; not quite sunset, yet lacking the absolute blackness of night. Snow had once blanketed the ground, yet already the fragile flakes had been vanquished by the merciless combination of rain, heat and vegetation. Where there had before been slush, water reigned supreme, trickling into the streets and flooding the gutters. The river too had swollen, gorging on the raindrops, expanding in girth and in length. Soon, the water might rise higher, covering the brown grasses, changing the rich soil to mud. Beside the river, a golden figure could be glimpsed. He distastefully lifted a muddy paw with revulsion; nose twitching at the pungent aroma. Irritated, he scanned his surroundings for the hint of intruders. Barely one pawstep away from the border marking ShadeClan and SunClan, he could feel the scentmarks of the enemy territory. The patrol had remained uneventful, once again he was given the messiest, boring job that his mentor could think of. Well, at least it was better than his last assignment. Addertongue had sent him after blue squirrels! When he attempted to protest, the older feline simply blinked his amber eyes in that unnerving fashion, than flopped gracelessly on the ground to watch. Still, no use thinking about that slimy furball. Acutely conscious of the mud clinging to this fur, he rolled his vibrant green eyes. This was going to be a long night.
